All Horses

that’s what we’re about

Not exactly Snowy River.

All Horses | January 20, 2009

Another video profiled on the Fugly Horse of the Day blog (generally more geared toward “asshat” owners than unpretty equines) today is this one, apparently the product of more southern horsefolk.

First, they’re kids.
We’ve all done stupid stuff as kids.
We didn’t have YouTube back then, so we can’t say for certain that we would or would [...]

“Dragging running horses”

All Horses | January 20, 2009

Sometimes I get such a kick out of the responses to the Fugly blog, I can’t help but throw my two cents in. Today was one of those days.
People put up the strangest stuff on YouTube.
First of all, this video is neither ha-ha funny nor is it disturbing to me. It’s humorous, in a way. [...]

Irresponsible breeding.

All Horses | December 11, 2008

Accidents happen. I get that.
I’ve had horses get out. They can be quite gifted at such things.
But fillies generally do not get knocked up the first time they’re bred. Let’s say the stud got out one day and had a few hours alone with the ladies—er, I mean his little girls—before the owners got home.
What [...]

Today on Fugly: TWH soring.

All Horses | September 23, 2008

I love Tennessee Walking Horses. Pretty much all gaited horse breeds, actually.
(With the exception of a certain few Standardbreds.)
But I am sickened by the “training” methods known as soring and think it is definitely time that someone outed the guilty.
Fugly Horse of the Day!: TWH fans, check it out!.

This is not emaciated.

re: Too bad lasik doesn’t fix barn blindness!
I don’t get why people see this and think it is starving, sad and malnourished.
[photo removed due to copyright holder's request]
He’s a young horse, just 3. I hate to see a hog-fat horse, but especially a hog-fat young horse still growing.
He’s an ungelded colt. Studs are going to [...]

Rescuing horses requires more than a big heart.

All Horses | August 11, 2008

The means to feed them is pretty important, too.
Sad news story out of Florida.
Brief synopsis of news story:
Don’t rescue what you can’t care for
Full article from July 29:
Dozens of horses need homes now

NOTE: Video on news site shows
many more malnourished horses
than photo gallery does.
Now, I’m not one to call a skinny horse STARVING … but [...]

Skinny on Fugly

All Horses | July 27, 2008

Sometimes I agree with the FHOTD blogger.
Sometimes I don’t.
Today, I’m not so sure I can agree with both her assessment and some of her readers’ assessments on this horse:

Comments:
“Are you one of the ignoramuses who thinks it’s skinny because it’s old and that’s normal? … why DIDN’T the judge and/or show management tell these people [...]

Welcome to Obese HOTD

All Horses | June 29, 2008

Skinny Horse of the Day has a sibling!
The name was inspired by the Fugly Horse of the Day blog, but the similarities end there.
I will profile random horses selected from photos available to the public in an effort to show that obesity in horses should be no more acceptable than malnutrition at the opposite end [...]

now that’s fugly

All Horses | July 17, 2007

I have a new snarky friend with a very fun blog:
http://fuglyhorseoftheday.blogspot.com/
Now I’ve owned quite a few horses that could guest star on this little celebration of mutations but I really enjoy the commentary.
Some of it you might not “get” if you’re not horsefolk, but I think most of it will sink in.
[EDIT: updated to let [...]
